Easter in Jerusalem

Sunday, April 19 marked Easter for hundreds of millions of Orthodox Christians, who use a different liturgical calendar than their counterparts in Catholicism or Protestantism. The AFP has a post about the celebration, which even took place in Jerusalem. We, of course, would like to wish a happy Easter, even if it's a few days too late.

Priests in black and golden robes performed the rites before the site of Jesus's tomb inside the church. Their heads covered with scarves, women kneeled to kiss the stone on which Christ's body was laid after his crucifixion.

On Saturday, thousands of Orthodox Christians converged on the church for the "Holy Fire" ceremony on the eve of Orthodox Easter.

Israeli police said about 10,000 worshippers were crammed inside the Holy Sepulchre and another 30,000 outside the church, built on the site where Christians believe Jesus was crucified, entombed and resurrected.
