(CNN) -- A plane crash in western India early Saturday killed more than 160 passengers, an Indian official said.
V.S. Acharya, the home minister of India's Karnataka state, told CNN-IBN he thought about six or seven people had survived the crash.
The Air India plane was carrying 165 passengers and went down in Mangalore, CNN-IBN reported, citing an airline spokesman.
The crash occurred around 6:30 a.m. near the Mangalore airport.
The plane had departed from Dubai, United Arab Emirates and had overshot the runway while attempting to land at the airport, the spokesman said, according to CNN's sister network.
On social networking site Twitter, some users suggested the incident could be linked to recent threats made to South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone. Viacom, owner of Comedy Central which broadcasts the edgy cartoon, has its headquarters in Times Square.
The location is also adjacent to the Viacom building, fuelling speculation that it might be linked to the company's controversial South Park cartoon which recently depicted Prophet Muhammad in a bear suit.
An official tells Fox News that a dark SUV was found to have what initial reports indicated was a "failed incendiary device," including gasoline, propane and wires.
The area is now secure, with immediate areas closed off.
A man was seen running from the vehicle, but authorities have not been able to find or identify him.
Police said Saturday the bomb squad was investigating the contents of the car on 45th Street.

SALT LAKE CITY — Airport officials say an airliner en route to San Francisco has been diverted to Salt Lake City following a bomb threat.
Salt Lake City Superintendent of Airport Operations Dave Korzep says the
FBI and airport police are on scene searching the plane.Korzep says the 193 passengers and six crew remain on board United Flight 741 and that there are buses waiting to transport passengers to the terminal when the all-clear is given.
Korzep had no details on the threat. The FBI in Salt Lake City said it couldn't confirm anything.
A United spokesperson says the flight was diverted as a precaution. The flight originated in Denver.
The house fire was contained, according to Austin fire officials. Records identified the homeowner at the address as Andrew J. Stack.
The plane crashed near an FBI building, but did not hit it, FBI spokesman Eric Vasas told CBS Radio News.
Officials tell the Associated Press one person is unaccounted for and two people were taken to the hospital.
Department of Homeland Security official Matt Chandler told CBS News there was "no reason to believe" the crash was related to terrorist activity.
Witnesses reported feeling a tremble and seeing the plane hit the side of the building, reports CBS affiliate KEYE-TV in Austin.
Black smoke was coming from the second and third stories of the building as fire crews using ladder trucks and hoses battled the fire. People had evacuated the building and were standing in the parking lot.
Dozens of windows were blown out of the hulking black building and vehicles traveling on a nearby highway paused to look.
FBI agents were also on the scene.
A spokesman from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport told CBS News that, as far as he knows, the airport's control tower had nothing to do with the plane.
In response to the crash, North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) launched two F-16 fighter jets from Ellington Field in Houston to conduct air patrols. Spokesman Jamie Graybeal said the patrols were a "prudent precaution and consistent with our response to recent similar air incidents."

“It was flying low and fast and I did a double take," Newberg said, according to the Web site.

He told the paper he thought the plane seemed “very controlled.”
Harry Evans, an assistant chief with the Austin Fire Department, said one person from the building was unaccounted for. He said two have been taken to a hospital.
"There may be other injuries, we are unsure at this time," Evans said during a news conference Thursday.
An Internal Revenue Service office is located inside the building.
IRS Agent William Winnie said he was on the third floor of the building when he saw a light-colored, single engine plane coming towards the building, TheStatesman.com reported.
“It looked like it was coming right in my window,” Winnie said, according to the Web sit.
Winnie said the plane veered down and smashed into the lower floors. “I didn’t lose my footing, but it was enough to knock people who were sitting to the floor.”
The Austin American-Statesman newspaper reported several "walking wounded" at the scene. Paramedics have set up a triage center at the scene.
Heavy smoke could be seen coming from the building at 9420 Research Boulevard. Several local witnesses on Twitter reported seeing flames coming out of the building and lots of broken glass.
Dozens of fire trucks were on scene and the building was evacuated.
Early reports that the building housed the FBI field office in Austin later turned out not to be true.
