US May Lax Cuba Restrictions

The new Administration is wasting no time changing the official US policies of the last forty-five years. It now appears that travel restrictions for US citizens going to Cuba may be lifted. This may go to show that our resolve is weakening, while the Castro brothers are able to rule Cuba at their whim.

In addition, what sort of example does this go to show the rest of the world? Flout US will and human rights, and we will reward you? Soon, American markets may be open to Cuban goods and Fidel might be riding around in a new Cadillac.

The Congress and the executive branch need to realize that with power comes responsibility.

The Freedom to Travel to Cuba Act introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives on Feb. 4 would allow American citizens unrestricted travel to Cuba for the first time since 1963. The bill by Rep. William Delahunt, D-Mass., and eight co-sponsors would also lift limits on travel by Cuban exiles living in the United States. The president would not be able to regulate travel to the island unless an armed conflict or armed danger arises.

The bill has gone too far, said Francisco "Pepe" Hernandez, president of the Cuban American National Foundation. Cuban exiles should visit their families whenever they want, but tourists shouldn't spend money in resorts that Cubans are barred from. "It's improper and should not be allowed until the Cuban government makes some reforms," he said.

Castro: Did I Ever Tell You About How Great Obama Is?

Former Cuban dictator Fidel Castro is now on the record praising our new President. What does this say about the strongman and what does it say about the President. And what does this say about the American people?

His remarks were disclosed by Cristina Fernandez, Argentina’s President, who met the former Cuban leader during a four-day visit to the communist island.

Mrs Fernandez said: “Fidel believes in Obama. He told me he had followed the inauguration of Barack Obama very closely, that he had watched the inauguration on television all day.

“He had a very good perception of President Obama.”

The Argentine premier said Mr Castro called Mr Obama “a man who seems absolutely sincere, who believes strongly in his ideas and who hopefully can carry them out”.

Well, Cuba is saying good things about us. That's change. I'll give the President the benefit of the doubt, especially considering he didn't go out and seek Castro's good graces. But this is still not necessarily a good sign.
