Hagel Backs Sestak

Joe Sestak's campaign has been going through a bit of a rough patch, falling behind Republican Pat Toomey in the Pennsylvania Senate Race. Sestak had a fair share of momentum after his dramatic defeat of incumbent Arlen Specter in the primary. However, with the potential pay-for-no-play scandal and weak campaigning, Sestak has fallen behind.

But now former Republican Senator and Vietnam veteran Chuck Hagel has endorsed him. It's not certain how much effect this will have on the race, but it is likely to be muted. Hagel was an anti-war critic of the Iraq conflict and famously did not endorse either John McCain or Barack Obama in 2008.

The men are seeking the seat long held by Sen. Arlen Specter, a Republican-turned-Democrat whom Sestak beat in the primary.
Hagel plans to announce his endorsement Tuesday at news conferences with Sestak in Pittsburgh and Philadelphia.
I guess then we'll see what the effects are in the future. However, Hagel is old news and may not do much for Sestak.

Toomey Leads Sestak by Seven

Rasmussen, the most accurate pollster out there, has released a new poll which places Republican Pat Toomey a full seven points ahead of Congressman Joe Sestak for the Pennsylvania Senate race. Not only are the results outside of the margin of error, it also pushes Toomey near 50%, an excellent sign in a good Republican year.

This also hurts Sestak at a vulnerable time. First, his surge from beating Arlen Specter in the Democratic Primary is fading. Secondly, the talk of the potential job offer from the Obama Administration may be damaging his credibility. While the offer should not necessarily hurt Sestak himself, voter's don't like to hear a candidate's name and "bribery" or "felony" in the same sentence.

Results:
Toomey: 45%
Sestak: 38%
Undecided/other: 17%.

12% are undecided while 5% choose another candidate. If these numbers are accurate, Sestak has to win all 12% to get to 50%-- a hard propostition without a game changer. I expect to see some attack ads come September/October.

Sestak Up by 2% Over Toomey

According to a new... yes, Daily Kos-Research 2000 poll, Congressman Joe Sestak is beating Republican Pat Toomey in the Senate contest in Pennsylvania. Kos polls don't tend to be too accurate, but since that's what we have today, we might as well highlight the results.

Sestak (D): 43%
Toomey (R): 40%

So what can we make out of this? There's still 17% undecided. With no incumbent and quite frankly, no incumbent party, it's baffling to see where the undecideds fall. However, considering that PA is a blue state, Toomey better be pushing hard if he wants to win.

Also according to the poll internal dynamics, 30% of independents are undecided....
