Who Wants to Follow North Korea on Twitter?

The North Korean government has made the next step in its quest to control its people and the world-- it has started a Twitter account. And they have done pretty well for themselves, gaining over 9,000 followers-- and following only one user-- YouTube!

So if you want to join up with the DPRK, check out their Twitter feed!

Furthermore, the United States is talking to the rogue regime on Twitter. The North has also created a YouTube channel in case you were wondering. They even have this awesomely bad cartoon:

The GOP and Twitter.

Republican candidates need to experiment with a new source of media; I'm not talking about the old fashioned blog, or that outdated facebook software, but with Twitter, where users can send a 140 character message out to the world, or just to their followers.

Why is Twitter crucial for the GOP and their candidates?

Well, Twitter will never win one Republican nor one Democrat candidate a position in local, state or federal government, but Twitter allows an impersonal bond between candidate and voter to occur, resulting in a campaign with stronger connections between the candidate and the electoral populace.

Some might argue that a strong connection between candidate and voter will lead to a stronger electoral standing, but that just isn't the case. Elections are not won on emotional or connection bonds, elections are won on a cold day in November, when after informed decisions are made, a large congregation of unknown voters come out of the woodwork's, and decide.

Call me old fashioned, or just a simpleton, but I would rather invest 100 hours of reaching out to local voters on the street, than spend valuable time "tweeting" about a nice old woman I met in a drug laced neighborhood. Twitter and "tweets" will never win one election, unless of course your opposing candidate says something stupid, but good old hard fashioned work has and will.

As stated in the opening paragraphs of this article, Republican candidates should expand their horizons to Twitter, for reasons of connecting with their base, and to allow their supporters to feel more "intouch" with their candidate of choice, but as a legitimate tool in campaigns - As a somewhat experienced campaigner, it's a waste of time.

Twitter is a network of a hundred million Americans, along with millions upon millions of other individuals from around the world, who like to "tweet" their favorite song, a new tidbit, dating status, and occasionally politics, in other words: Twitter is your local High School and "tweets" are your paper airplanes and crib notes.

It should be treated as such, not as an invaluable campaigning tool.

"Save our Pubs" campaign works in England.

Andrew Griffiths was the Conservative candidate for Parliament in Burton, and according to a recent "tweet" from the United Kingdom Conservative Party twitter account, Mr.Griffiths was running on a "Save our Pubs" campaign, and he still won the election. In fact, Mr.Griffiths won with 44.5% of the vote, a 7.2% increase for the Conservative Party in Burton.

Andrew Griffiths won in a 12 year dominated Labour district, with 44.5% of the vote, due in part for running a campaign based on beer. I'm not kidding, this issue was substantial in his election, even his campaign website has Supporting the Brewing Industry number two on his issues page, I just can't believe it.

Apparently 33% of the price of every pint of beer goes towards taxation in Britain, forcing local Pubs to close on a regular basis, while punishing casual beer drinkers for the problems of hostile alcoholics. No wonder Mr.Griffiths ran and won his campaign on beer, perhaps candidates should consider a similar campaign on tobacco to win elections in America.

If John McCain was running for Prime Minister in England: With his wife has a well known Beer Distributor owner, he would have won without a fight. God Bless the voters in the Burton district and God Save the Pubs!

Hat Tip to Professor Jacobson

To be serious for a moment: Congratulations to Mr.Griffith for winning his election in Burton, for hopefully helping to elect David Cameron as Prime Minister and for helping to restore Conservatism in the United Kingdom, one Pint and one Pub at a time.

Facebook isn't always my favorite tool, seeing that it seems like it is the gateway for Nosferatu to drink the blood of drunk college students, but it has come in handy to create a fan club for our humble blog. Did Iran Attack Twitter?

Twitter was recently put offline due to an online attack. The attack overloaded the system and gave the message of "denial of service."

So far Twitter does not know exactly who launched the cyber-attack, but it appears coordinated and malicious.

So who would have the resources to attack Twitter? An online corporation or a country would definitely fit the bill. What about motive? Facebook has had its market curtailed by Twitter, but still remains on the top of the heap. Other corporations use/are in partnership with Twitter.

Which leads us to Iran. Iranian dissdents have famously used Twitter to circumvent the blocking of communications by the theocracy. Iran would have two reasons to attack Twitter: One is to punish the site for helping dissidents, including a famous delay of site maintenance to help the resistance. In addition, Twitter is still being used to coordinate anti-mullah activities.

Shutting down such a powerful site, even temporarily, would show that Iran does not joke around and intends to, as President Ahmadinejad recently said, will punch their enemies in the face.
