Andrew Sullivan is an Idiot

Now, notwithstanding my headline, I'm sure that Andrew Sullivan actually has a brain to think with. That being said, it's particularly repulsive that he would not take the time to think out his latest article in the Atlantic in which he indirectly (with a picture, no doubt) compares the Bush Administration's decision to waterboard three admitted terrorists to the Nazi massacre of the Czech town of Lidice during the Second World War.

The picture above is of Lidice, where another executive whose power trumped all law and all treaties in wartime commanded an army that, upon entering the town of Lidice, on June 10, 1942, murdered all 192 men over 16 years of age from the village on the spot. Below is a more recent example in American history of a massacre of a village, My Lai, in Vietnam:

Again, I am not saying that Yoo approves of such a thing, just that he believes that this is what presidential power inherently permits in wartime. If the president had ordered the massacre directly, because he believed it tactically necessary for national security, it would have been totally legal and constitutional - and no crime would have been committed by anyone under his command.

Lidice is one of the worst intentional massacres of civilians in recent history, conducted after the successful assassination of SS Lieutenant Reinhard Heydrich by partisans. To compare the legal decision to allow waterboarding of Khalid Sheik Mohammed, the architect of 9/11 to the SS massacre of civilians due to the killing of the man who was the architect of Nazi repression in Bohemia-Moravia is intellectually shameful.

Obama to Nominate 'Apology Czar'

WASHINGTON- Following in line with appointing an internet czar, pay czar, and car czar, President Obama today announced his intentions to nominate a so-called 'apology czar.'

As with other czars, this nominee would be in direct contact with the President, making certain jobs easier. In this case, the apology czar would map out where Obama would go and what he would apologize for.

In a press release, the White House detailed specific responsibilities of this new post: "The man or woman accepted to this position would coordinate proactively with groups that deserve an apology from the United States. Each group can apply for an apology via email, letter, or text message.

"Any people, nation, or ethnic group will be thoroughly investigated to verify what America did to it and when. If it is found that our nation sufficiently hurt or by any means insulted the applicant, a structured attempt to apologize to them will be planned. Regardless of the matter, the President will always apologize in person."

"Things are looking good," said Greg Scott, a secretary for President Obama. "We've already had dozens of requests. I mean, we've got a request from North Korea, Nazis who survived World War II, and poor people who want more benefits."

Speaking to the media on Thursday, President Obama made his case for Henry Harrison, whom Obama plans to nominate. "Henry is clearly the best man for this job," the President began. "He can get on his knees and beg forgiveness. Seriously, he can gravel and kiss ass like the best of them, and that's exactly what we need.

"Can he apologize to Hugo Chavez? No problem. Can he apologize to Mahmud Ahmadinejad? With ease. Heck, Henry here is so good at apologizing, he can apologize to himself!" The crowd at hand erupted in laughter, but fell dead silent when it became apparent that the President wasn't joking.

The nominee is slated to come in front of Congress this coming July.

Hero: Elie Wiesel

One of our features is a hero who we think exemplifies the positive traits of a human being. And one of our heroes is more than just a hero, he is a truly great person. I am honored to nominate Elie Wiesel.

Born in Romania, Wiesel's entire family was murdered by the Nazis. He wrote the famous book Night about this. While the book is incredibly heart-wrenching, it should be required reading for every school child:

Never shall I forget those moments which murdered my God and my soul and turned my dreams to dust. Never shall I forget these things, even if I am condemned to live as long as God Himself. Never.

And Wiesel made sure that the world did not forget the horrors of the Holocaust. He tried to make it so it did not happen again. He has written many books, with the intent of making sure that humanity does not repeat the same mistakes and that we think about what we are doing. He won the Nobel Peace Prize and met with President Bush to ask that Saddam Hussein be removed from power for his crimes.

He truly is a hero:

Let us remember, let us remember the heroes of Warsaw, the martyrs of Treblinka, the children of Auschwitz. They fought alone, they suffered alone, they lived alone, but they did not die alone, for something in all of us died with them.

Movie Review-- Valkyrie

I was fortunate enough to see the movie Valkyrie with Tom Cruise a little while back. Overall, it was a positive experience. Cruise was good in the role of Count Stauffenburg and the rest of the supporting staff was good. This was particularly the case for the actor that played General Frohm.

The film was mostly historically accurate, but appeared to give too much leeway to Cruise's character. While Stauffenburg is a hero who did much to stop the Third Reich, the rest of the organization against Hitler was ignored in the film. For example, Erwin Rommel's role (which would later cause his suicide) was not included.

The movie was directed well, as the action left the viewer in suspense. This is an excellent feat, considering that most people must know how the adventure ends. Scenes are interposed excellently and even many technical details of the plot are used.

This movie is a must for history buffs, and is a good movie for those who are not. Even Hitler was in it. Good and to the point, this film earns:

3.5 stars/4.
