Game Review: Rulers of Nations

A little more than a year ago, I was fortunate enough to review the game Geopolitical Simulator. Today, I am writing a review for its sequel, Rulers of Nations, also made by Eversim. Like its predecessor, it attempts to show both broad and limited trends within and and among the different countries of the world.
The good:
Like its predecessor, Rulers of Nations does a far more elaborate, and a far better job than anything else on the market. Compared to other games in the genre, none are so detailed and realistic. Even more so than even Geopolitical Simulator, this game shows how the world works and how the player can manipulate it.

The game also runs more smoothly than GS, being streamlined. It is easier to find many of the new features and input new figures for a budget or government plan. There are also easier ways to manage energy supplies and production. The game also seems to run quicker, which is an advantage when playing a long-term game-- especially on an older computer. This was something I was glad to see improved from the last game.

Again, using one of the strengths of GS, there are scenarios for the player to embark on. These are expanded from the last game. That being said, the regular, world as it is scenario is the most fulfilling.

Diplomatic options are slightly expanded, which the lack thereof was one thing that irked me about its predecessor. RoN still retains the UN and other international organizations.

The Bad

Fortunately, with an improved game, Rulers of Nations deals with less bad issues. The game is reformed in several ways and appears to be bringing more to the table. Still, it's not perfect.

Shifts in public opinion are still too dramatic. While playing as the Prime Minister of Iraq, I attempted to balance the budget using relatively simple moves. I kept getting thrown out of office. The actions I tried seem to be less than the actual government of Iraq's options, so that confused and annoyed me.

Diplomatic ties were improved, but still not stellar. Movement of military forces were awkward at best, and still unwieldy. Moving to a province-to-army format, like in the Europa Universalis games, would probably prevent this. Again, with a few more diplomatic options, I was pleased, but I would still like to see more ties between countries. Basically, they are still limited to trade deals and alliances-- which are far too few for a game as complex as this.

Final Rating:
8.0/10.0
Good

Fallout New Vegas Review

First off, I wanted to say that I've played all of the Fallout Games (not counting Tactics or Brotherhood of Steel) and I've enjoyed each one of them. Probably my favorite has been Fallout 2 and that's part of the reason I was so excited to play New Vegas.

The game starts fairly simply in an unmarked grave until you're found by a doctor who patches you up and has you determine your SPECIAL and other traits. The main storyline is compelling but short, just like Fallout 3. While it appears that there are a similar amount of side quests between Fallout 3 and NV, the world is significantly smaller in New Vegas. This hurts the playability of the overall game and significantly reduces just what you can do.

There are bugs galore. Targeting, camera, scripts... it's a lot. And it's distracting and takes away from the gameplay. There's even a bug in opening the game!

Also, loads take a tremendously long time and are a pain in the butt. You could wait upwards of a half minute just leaving a building. One review described them as "demoralizing" and I agree.

A few observations:

  • The radio stations in NV are inferior to 3. Mr. New Vegas is a nice touch, but with far fewer lines than Three Dog. Besides, two of the stations share the same music, which is pretty good but are far fewer than the number in 3.

  • There are bugs galore-- I know I already said that, but I have to again.
  • The ending is far improved over 3, however you still can't play after that.
  • Some parts are far deeper into the lore and use characters from Fallout 2. Other parts are shorter and rushed.
  • It feels like there's a genuine war between the Legion and the New California Republic. However, there's far less Legion territory and interaction (unless you actively side with them).

Overall, this game is both satisfying and frustrating. It feels like the game was rushed and if given another six months it could have far outstripped Fallout 3. It's still worth buying but make sure to download the patch.

Overall:
8.75/10.0
Very good, would have been a 9.0 without the bugs.

Did you play it? What do you think?

Special thanks to multiple sites for the pictures.

Massachusetts Restaurant Review #1: 'The Causeway' of Gloucester

Blogs need articles and I've been in Massachusetts for the last few days.  So I figured that I'd review some of the places that I spent time in.

Today's Review: Causeway Restaurant of Gloucester
I ate in Massachusetts mostly in Gloucester, Rockport, and a couple of times in Boston.  The Causeway is without a doubt the best place that I had dinner.

The New England clam chowder was the best that I've ever had.  Rich and creamy, full of flavor from every spoon, you have to have at least a cup.  The service as well was the best that I've ever had.  Quick and alert, the waiters and waitresses did excellent work.

As for the main courses, I ate there thrice, so I'll judge each meal individually.  The first night I had steak tips, which were superb.  I told our waitress to give my compliments to the chef.  Two nights later I had some surf & turf, which comprised of a 8 oz. steak and a shrimp casserole. The bread crumbs on the casserole were excellent, but the shrimps' flavor left a little to be desired.  The steak was good.  The next day I had steak tips again, however this time they were burnt.

Price-wise, the Causeway is in the middle of the pack for restaurants.  Value-wise, however, it is far ahead of the rest.

I give the Causeway Restaurant four-and-a-half stars out of five: Excellent.

Product Review: Vital Energy

I first became aware of Vital Energy when I came across a viral video its owners created, which garnered more than 250,000 hits on YouTube.  It was a neat video, so I contacted the CEO of VE, Michael Joseph, and interviewed him.  In time, I got my hands on Vital Energy, and here is what I've found.

Since I'm off from college, and only work in the early morning for a short amount of time, my sleeping schedule is all screwed up.  So, the day that I got VE, I woke up at about three in the afternoon.  Come 6am (fifteen hours later), I was starting to get sleepy, so I drank about half a bottle of Tangerine flavor.  Half a bottle.  Come 7am, I was awake.  Come 8am, I was awake.  Come 9am, 10am, and 11am, I was awake.  I finally got tired at 11:30am and went to sleep.  That was five and a half hours of energy from half a bottle.

So I might as well say this now, since it is the most important thing: Vital Energy is the most energizing drink I've ever had.  I've had Nos, Rockstar, Coffee, Tea, Monster, and so on, but this one tops them all.  It does the job that it was made to do.

Another impressive thing about VE is that it tastes unlike the average energy drink.  While it won't win any awards for fantastic taste (though it does not taste bad), the flavor is a breath of fresh air.

I also tested VE for its hydration qualities.  While I want to stress that this product is not specifically made for hydrating people, it did a good job.  I drank most of one while playing baseball for two hours, and I never felt I needed anything more.

So, to compartmentalize my review:

Energy: 5/5
Flavor: 3.5/5
Originality: 4.5/5
Hydration: 4/5

Overall: 4.25/5:  Excellent

Dragon Age:Origins Game Review

Dragon Age is another RPG game from Bioware. Considering the complete and utter awesomeness that is Mass Effect ,also developed by Bioware, I decided to give this game a proper chance. The most interesting thing about the game is the way it begins. Allowing you to choose a race and class in the form of origin stories. These change everything about your character save for becoming a grey warden. Many story elements are also affected by your choice hear giving the game a strong replayability factor.

The Battle system is much like KOTOR where your character has a target and you give commands and they act them out rather than a more hands on style. While this does seem alittle detaching from the battle it does actually give it a quality of fluidity that can be very enjoyable as whole attacks can be scripted out to create more convincing combat and cool finishers. This is combined with a trigger/effect system of strategy. Your characters have whats called Tactics Slots. These can be used to set action ques for your abilities and attacks. At first it is kind of daunting but its easy to pick up and once you utilize it battles can become works of art. With commands going as in depth as setting interceptions to protect support characters and chaining moves to produce shifting combat flow in the middle engagements. And armed with a "injury system" that incurs penalties on party members who are downed in fights producing harder and harder battles if the wounds are ignored the battle system is quite interesting.

The graphics wont win any awards but they are certainly more than adequate for a game of this type. The style is a type of gritty dark realism that I have come to appreciate in games. The world is violent and hostile, dying is a very common event in Ferelden and the game lets you know that from the start. While sometimes bordering the comical you will often find yourself in conversation with the blood of your last opponent still splattered across your face and clothes.

The game also has greate relationship building amongst the party members. Each party member has unique likes in items and actions, with their own morality. Each feels like there own person and can easily hate or like you. They can leave your party or even attack you on the negative end or enter a physical relationship with you on the positive. As you can be a man or woman in the game there are relationship possibilties for all, hetero men and woman as well as gay men or woman and even bisexual. Threesomes are also possible in the game.

But the game does have a few weaknesses. The story tends to be a little slow and you almost never feel the urgency of the coming blight. This is not that bad though and is an acceptable loss to maintain the expansive choice making events. The travel system is probably the weakest part of the game with you selecting a destination from a world map and then "fast traveling" there marked by blotches across the roads on the map and sometimes having random encounters. It is very redundant and at times down right annoying. Despite the style enticing me there are no actually cinematics. With the exception of the intro movie to the game everything is done in game-play level graphics. This is true even for the ending which is done in backgrounded paragraphs describing rather than showing the following events. In addition the classes could be more refined to create more of a difference in play style between them, especially the spellcasters who are particularly roughly made. The game is somwhat glitchy with many noticable, if your paying attention, on any given play through that can on some occasions affect quests.

Over all it is a worthy title and with a building amount of downloadeble content it is a good buy. Bioware plans on making the game part of a universe with multimedia releases and more games. The Dragon Age universe is very interesting and while still young holds great promise. I cant wait to see were Bioware takes this gritty and intriguing franchise.

Check Out the Obamadome

George Bush is so stupid....

Sarah Palin's daughter....

John McCain is so old...

Tired of the same hackneyed, poorly thought out left-wing garbage falsely labeled humor? Tired of everyone in showbusiness and the Daily Show talking down to you because you don't find their "jokes" hilarious? Tired of the death of comedy that tragically occurred among so-called comedians over the last eight years?

Let's forget all of that and turn to a conservative take on things. Since you're here, you probably like satire. And if you like satire, I wholeheartedly urge you to visit the Obamadome.

With videos of the President as a soft, felt model (realistic to his soft-left approach to everything) the site shows you what's on his mind in their own satirical manner.

Interested to see what happens when Obama pardons a terrorist? Or what about his plan to save the country from eight years of Bush-genocide policies? I'm sure that you were all concerned about rampant rumors that the President was actually a superhero...

So take a minute and visit the Obamadome... see what's on the President's mind while taking in a good dose of healthy satire. Real satire, not just bullcrap that comes out of Hollywood.

Book Review: Whiny Little Bitch: The Excuse-Filled Presidency of the Barack Obama

Recently I received a copy of Whiny Little Bitch: The Excuse-Filled Presidency of the Barack Obama from a reader. Personally, I was happy to receive the copy but feared that it would be a nonsensical rant filled with grammatical errors and false drawings of the President's "real" birth certificate.

Instead I found a compelling, concise look at the first eighteen months of the Presidency of Barack Obama. Author Mike Cullen broke down the discussion by topic, including foreign policy, the stimulus, banking reform, and others. Each chapter is filled with authentic quotes from the chief executive and his Cabinet as well as the news stories that we wish we could forget from 2008 and 2009.

Some excerpts:

What about the economy? Obama's stimulus plan had no prayer of creating jobs and he was smart enough to know it. But an $800 billion plan that makes no sense as economic stimulus can make perfect sense as a vote-buying scheme.

and

With Obama, the truth is always flexible. There's one version for the CNN audience and another for the ACORN activists. He needs one group to like him and the other to work for him.

Cullen has put together a relatively thorough but still terse look at the administration of the 44th President. Look for it at Quite Right Books and stock up-- let your friends and family know and it'd make a good gift for July 4th, birthdays, Bar Mitzvahs, and Christmas.

Resident Evil 4 Review

I finished this game several months ago on the PS2, so I suppose a review is in order.
Bra-ains

Resident Evil 4 continues with the series' over-arching enemy: zombies. Yet the plot is nice and fresh, with a surprising depth of plot development and inertia. The main character, Leon Kennedy, is sent to a semi-deserted rural area to find the United States' President's daughter. Guess what: the job is more complicated than he thought at first and OMG, zombies!

Of course this is expected, but the story and script writing is excellent. The voice-overs are also good. The only problem with the script and voices are Leon's one-liners. While the protagonist has to say something to retort an enemy's brags, lines like "Rain or shine, you're going down" don't exactly do the trick. Yet, at times the lines are just so bad that they are actually endearing.

The antagonists in the game are also done well; I hate that Napoleon-esqe 20-year-old! The game shines here as well as the numerous boss battles.Shooting Zombies in the Face is Fun

The combat and storage system in this Resident Evil is the best one in the series, and that's coming from someone who's played part of the fifth, watched someone play part of the first, and looked at the packaging of the second. But all of my qualifications aside, the hit detection in this game is spot-on and the suitcase system is impressive.

Further, the Easter eggs and treasures to be found in 4 are plentiful and fun to find. Also, can somebody explain how the merchant keeps getting in front of me so he can sell me things?! As for graphics, there are hardly any PlayStation 2 games that look prettier. This game looks good and is a lot of fun.Even 4 has Faults

Yes, every game ever made has faults, but with RE 4, these are pretty minor. There are just three: first, Leon's hilariously bad one-liners. Two, at times separate climaxes of the story don't get the emphasis they deserve. Three, the final boss battle, in my opinion, was a little too easy and a little too quick.

The Final Verdict

Do you like good stories? Do you like fun? Do you like shooting zombies in the face with a rocket launcher? If so, then pick up Resident Evil 4.

The Final Score: A 9/10: Excellent

BioShock Review

In the last three days I have finished Mass Effect 2, BioShock, and Final Fantasy XII. No doubt there aren't that many high-profile games out there, so days like this may never come again. Here now is my review of the critically acclaimed BioShock.
Rapture

When a flight goes wrong, you find yourself in the middle of the ocean, treading water to survive. Swimming for any sort of land, you find yourself headed to a tower that leads down, down to the underground city of Rapture. Your trip, and the survival that you claw to there, is one of the strongest suits of the game. The setting is very strong; the dystopian, 1930s feeling is there and never leaves.

An Atlas Will Tell You Where to Go

Navigation through Rapture is easy enough, with a certain Atlas directing you with a radio that you find. Much of the narration of the story comes from this simple tool, but it is used very effectively. Of course, Atlas is not the only person you'll talk to, but you can find that out yourself. As for missions, most of the time a helpful arrow a la Crazy Taxi will direct you towards your destination. It works well most of the time, though will occasionally struggle when there are more than one floor to work with.

Wrenches

Weapons in BioShock start with your handy wrench and expand from there. By far the strongest part of combat in BioShock are the "plasmids," or genetic mutations, you gain throughout the game. From psychic abilities to strengthening your body, plasmids are a good upgrade system.
Unfortunately, throughout the game I couldn't shake the feeling that combat was a little unpolished. Too many times did I have something in my cross-hairs (or circles) where I missed; after playing for more than ten hours, the annoyance adds up.

In line with an unpolished feeling was the normally interesting ability to hack turrets, safes, and vending machines. While this is a good feature, in the later stages of the game at times it was literally impossible to hack some systems. Once again, it felt unpolished.

The Plot's the Thing

BioShock features one of the best twists in this generation of video games. It takes you by surprise, but definitely makes you wonder how you could miss it. The only problem with it was that it wasn't quite built up enough.

However, the very ending of BioShock is not good. It's about a minute and mine (there are three possibilities) didn't really make sense. I was very disappointed by this very subpar ending, and moderately easy final boss fight.

A City on an Underwater Hill

BioShock is a good game, but it is not a great game. Without a big payoff in the end, especially after a great twist, leaves the experience dull. The setting is good but the gameplay feels a bit unpolished; pick it up and enjoy it, but don't expect too much out of it.

The Final Verdict: 7.75/10 Good

Mass Effect 2 Review

There has been exceedingly few games that I have looked forward to more than the sequel to the amazing Mass Effect. Does Mass Effect 2 live up to its name? Yes. Is Mass Effect 2 as good as its predecessor? Well, that question is a bit more tricky.

You Are What You Choose

I reveled in the freedom of the first Mass Effect, and its sequel takes this concept so much further. Huge steps in storytelling were made in ME's intimidate, charm, and causality the first time around. Now, your actions are even more enhanced with the ability to interrupt in the middle of conversations. At specific times, if you don't like where a discussion is going or you want to make a point, Shepard can interject and change the course of words. This is a huge improvement over the already spectacular story telling. Speaking of which...
Cinematic Flare

Story telling is also improved in ME 2, with better graphics, virtually zero textural pop ups, and incredibly cinematic camera angles. I never knew that a normal conversation could be so enthralling. On top of these are outstanding cut scenes that are some of the best ever created. Along with these benefits are sometimes very long load times, some pushing half a minute. But at least you're not looking at people ride an elevator anymore.

Holding all of these things together is one of the greatest voice-acting casts ever assembled. Every single voice, even down to the most minor, are knocked out of the ball park. Absolutely amazing.
The Illusive Man

Playing With Guns

The combat system of ME2 has been heavily changed for this outing. No longer do weapons have unlimited ammo, no more vast choices in weaponry and upgrades (though there are several), and aiming has been very refined. Without a doubt, this aspect of the game is an improvement over Mass Effect, but I would still like to know why they got rid of infinite ammo. In the original I was able to construct an assault rifle that never overheated, even if you kept you finger to the trigger for ten minutes. A plausible explanation of why weapons like that were replaced would have been nice. Further, I don't understand why upgrades were almost completely phased out. ME's upgrade system needed refinement, but not expulsion.

But I have good news for everyone: NPCs no longer blindly shoot the walls in front of them. This time your crew members are valuable assets; gone are the days of single-handedly defeating a horde of geth.
Changes Aren't Always Good

While the shooting and NPC mechanics of Mass Effect 2 are mostly good, the elimination of many RPG elements take away some joy of playing. Killing enemies will no longer bring you XP; instead, you get a lump sum of experience when you end a mission or assignment. There are two major problems with this set up, unfortunately. First, after completing a main story mission, such as ones concerning loyalty or recruitment, you get a large amount of XP. This is an okay set up, but when completing assignments, you mainly receive paltry amounts of experience. As a result, I found that I lacked a drive to finish every assignment. Second, at the end of every mission, you get a screen that reviews what you did on your mission. How much experience you received, what upgrades you found, and so on. At times, this severely disrupts the flow of gameplay and destroys suspension of disbelief.

Compounding the problems with lump sum XP is the bare bones leveling system. If you do not earn the loyalty of your crew, they only have three attributes to increase, and even after loyalty is gained, you only have four. This almost makes leveling up seem pointless; more options are desperately needed.

Characters and Plot

There is no mistaking it: this saga has one of the best plots in the history of video games. Added to the mix are more crew members and loyalty missions, making ME2 even more character driven. While the concept is outstanding, the execution in ME2 is less than perfect.

Some characters in Mass Effect 2 are exceedingly interesting, most notably Thane, Tali, Mordin, and Miranda. Unfortunately, other characters either need more fleshing out to be interesting (Jacob), or are throw away generic characters, like the downloadable Zaeed, the mercenary with a bloody past, but who proves himself a hero.
Thane= Pure Awesome

Another problem that crops up in ME2 is a combination. First, while the story arch in Mass Effect 2 proves itself to be excellent in the end, compared to the original it is less compelling. In Mass Effect there is a clear enemy, Saren, and you are chasing him across the galaxy to stop him from bringing back a threat that could wipe out life, the Reapers. In Mass Effect 2, there is no single antagonist other than the rarely seen Harbinger and your goal, stopping the Collectors somehow, are less clear. While this adds to the mystery, the doom that you felt that you had to stop in the original just isn't there in the sequel.

Second, because of the less compelling plot, more missions dealing with it were needed. Instead, recruitment and loyalty missions get in the way of the main plot. Unfortunately, in many cases the loyalty and recruitment missions consist of: be dropped at the beginning of level, move linearly to group of surprising information, finish mission. This is not to say that all such missions were indeed bad, for example Tali's loyalty mission is excellent, but that some opportunities were squandered.

In the End...

Honestly, with several bad flaws in the game, the revelations and the ending make it all worth while. But is Mass Effect 2 as good as Mass Effect? No, it is not. ME2 desperately needed some of the RPG elements that it lost and a visible enemy to hate. While plot and characters are mainly great in this saga, the leveling system needs improvement for the coming Mass Effect 3. I trust that BioWare will do a good job; they just need to take the good from the first and second and combine them.

The Final Verdict: 8/10, Good

Domino's New Pizza Stinks; Domino's Putting Up Fake Reviews to Boost Ratings

Saw the commercials, couldn't believe that people were singing the graces of the "new and improved" Domino's pizza. Then I remembered, hey, I write for a blog that has singles of hits every day! And I also remembered an invention called the "interwebs," formerly known as the internet.

So I decided to do some research of my own. Much to my not-surprise, not only were praises of Domino's new pizza sparse, but outright rage towards their "cardboard" with sauce were everywhere. So please enjoy some choice collections of new Domino Pizza Reviews:

1/5 Stars: Terrible

I tried the "new and improved" dominos pizza recently and was not impressed, to say the least. The only difference that I noticed was that they just use more dough to make a thicker crust. The sauce is horrible, the cheese is low quality, and the toppings are scarce. Anyone who actually thinks this is good pizza either completely lacks taste buds or is high on drugs. Dominos and most of the larger chains have ruined pizza. Most of these places use frozen dough and low quality ingredients. Give your mom and pops the business, You'll get a much better pie. Tell dominos to keep their crappy pizza and gimmicky nonsense they try to sell you along with the pizza.

1/5 Stars: Terrible

I tried Domino's because of the ads touting the new taste. We ordered one 2 item thin crust, one 2 item regular chewy crust in medium for 5.99 each. I ordered pepperoni and double cheese. I was told that was 3 items. I asked how that was? I asked if cheese was considered extra. She said extra cheese was ok as a topping but double cheese was considered 2 toppings by itself. Hmmmmm. She sounded dumb enough not to waste my time arguing. The order was 20 minutes late. Frankly they were absolutely terrible. The sauce was way too sweet, the small amount of cheese wasn't cheesy, the crust was like cardboard with garlic salt sprinkled on. The pepperoni was skimpy as were the green peppers. I'll never order their product again. I'd rather eat a frozen Tombstone than a fresh Dominos. People, don't waste your money!

1/5 Stars: Terrible

I tried the "new" pizza and it is awful. Does anyone remember the 80's when their pizza really was good? Why can't they go back to that? I called the store back and complained that the crust is the same ole crust with the exception of brushing butter and garlic on the butt of the crust and she just laughed and said I was right. It is just awful.

I couldn't taste any difference in the sauce or cheese. I again am through with these guys. Just awful.

1/5 Stars: Terrible

No thanks, I'll pass. If I want to eat cardboard, I'll just go for the real thing.

1/5 Stars: Terrible

It is by far the worst pizza I've ever had, it's just that every time I order pizza from this place, I say I am not going to do it, well I promise, this is going to be the last time!

Who mixes Fetta cheese with mozzarella!!!! That new garlic prawn pizza is just disgusting, I had a frozen prawn in it & the fishy taste is unbearable!

Honestly, it's a shame!

And some choice fake reviews by Domino's that they put in themselves. Seriously, after looking at the other reviews and the "profiles" of people who gave these particular ratings, how can they think that anyone believe that these are real?

5/5 Stars: Great

Their new recipe is awesome! The new choice of sauces and expanded topping choices is just great. We tried the white sauce with spinach, mushrooms and onions and it was delicious! We also tried their new robost sauce with provolone and cheddar cheese toppings... yum! The crust is now brushed with a buttery garlic sauce before it's baked so it tastes so much better than it did before. You should give it a try you won't be disappointed!

5/5 Stars: Great

I have been to Dominos a hand full of times and I was never impressed. Then one evening my girlfriend and her mom wanted some quick inexpensive pizza, so they suggested Little Caesars. (Ugh!) I remember seeing a Dominos commercial and hearing about their "new pizza". To make a long story short I went to my local Dominos resturant and ordered a medium pepperoni pizza with extra cheese for around 6 bucks. The service was good and the pizza was great. I definetly feel I got my bang for my buck, thanks Dominos you made me a believer, I will see you guys soon(super Bowl)!

5/5 Stars: Great

Wow guys. You're all liars. I've been working at a CSR at Dominos in Atlanta for a while now.. None of those things are true. For one, we cut the pizza and put it directly into a stickered box. No one eats the pizza, or they would get immediatly fired. Ever think of your kids taking a slice before you noticed it so they could get more? The second thing. We don't freeze our dough. EVER. We hand toss every pizza, sauce/cheese/top it ourselves with a lot of care. Managers are extremelt strict and any employee's who don't take care in making this pizza will get fired. Its great pizza at a great price.

Notice how each of these fake ones nail the new stuff and try to tell you that all the old problems have changed? Not to mention disparaging other pizza chains (Little Ceasars) and using buzz words like "bang for the buck" and "great pizza at a great price." Or how about calling everyone else "liars?"
