Mideast Nations Lining Up Against Iran

 The German news magazine Der Spiegel has an interesting article about the nations of the Middle East that are lining up to oppose Iran. Der Spiegel is usually a left-wing publication, but their article here seems to capture the fear that is permeating the Arab nations in the region.

The understanding that Iran cannot get nuclear weapons seems to be almost universal:

Almost all Arab neighbors have a hostile relationship with the Islamic Republic. Saudi Arabia suspects Iran of stirring up the Shiite minority in its eastern provinces. The Arab emirates accuse Iran of occupying three islands in the Persian Gulf. Egypt has not had regular diplomatic relations with Iran since a street in Tehran was named after the murderer of former Egyptian President Anwar el-Sadat.

Jordanian King Abdullah II warns against the establishment of a "Shiite crescent" between Iran and Lebanon. And Kuwait, fearing the Iranians, installed the Patriot air defense missile system in the spring.

It will be interesting to see how the Arab nations in the region will react if the United States or Israel does not act militarily to stop Iran's nuclear ambition. Saudi Arabia is the only one strong enough and close enough to strike the nuclear sites effectively.

Europe to Give Gaza Over $500 Million

Yes-- I know. It appears that Europe just doesn't get it. Even after Hamas provoked a war with its democratic neighbor, Israel, Gaza will be receiving $552 million in aid from the nations of Europe.

But are we any better? Our own government has pledged almost one billion dollars in aid. This comes as we are building up a tremendous deficit. Should we really be spending on credit so that Hamas can buy some new rocket launchers? Something is creepy about this and we really need to get a grip.

Unfortunately, everything appears to be looked at in the eyes of "change." We've got some problems with these decisions, though:

According to the Voice of America, the Palestinian Authority is asking for almost $3 billion to rebuild Gaza. First: is the GDP of Gaza even approaching this figure? Would it be worth it to do this and spend all of this money to encourage the next war.

Second and far more important: the Palestinian Authority doesn't even control Gaza! Hamas does! How can the PA be asking for all of this money to rebuild Gaza when they couldn't even spend it on repairs or public works! Instead, some of this money would be stolen in the fashion of Yasser Arafat.

Third, if the money goes to Gaza, it would go to the Hamas government. Why would Europe or the United States directly or indirectly give money to a terrorist group, except out of weakness or stupidity.

Even if 1% of the EU's and the US's money goes to buy weapons, that's still over $15 million! That thousands of guns and millions of bullets! That's thousands of IEDs or grenades! How many Jews have to die because of our shortsidedness?

This is blood on our hands.

Israel Nails Hamas

I am perhaps the most pro-Israeli person I know, and I am not Jewish, I am a Christian Conservative, and this is the land of Israel. Hamas is a band of ruthless terrorists who like other Arab leaders want the destruction of Israel to come about, a two state plan will never work, a three state plan (as UN ambassador Bolton has suggested) will never work, only a one state plan - the entire gaza strip & west bank in the rightful hands of the owner, Israel will work.

The invaders have overstayed their welcome, they refuse to call Israel a nation, they refuse to have peace, because they are hellbent on Israel being no longer, I hope Israel will just decide to take over their entire region and give all of the invaders to the U.N. and all of the Euro nations that push for "peace", you want peace? THEN YOU TAKE THEM!

Everytime Israel does anything to defend themselves, the waves of Anti-Semite ravagings by the Liberal left just flood around the world.

I support Israel, they need to take their land back.

Who Should be Obama's Secretary of Defense

There's been a lot of talk about who Barack Obama will choose to become his next Secretary of State. It may be a good idea for him to concentrate on his Secretary of Defense, too. Obama has talked about bipartisanship a great deal during the campaign, so this is his chance to demonstrate it.

Robert Gates has been a non-partisan, steady hand at the Pentagon since the resignation of Donald Rumsfeld. He has overseen the surge strategy that is decimating al Qaeda in Iraq and has been a very pragmatic secretary.

There are other candidates for the job, to be sure. However, it is up to Obama to blend both competency and bipartisanship. If Gates or someone similar is not named, then Obama's campaign promises are nil.

Can Someone Explain This to Me? Part 2

Throughout the Presidential campaign, Barack Obama has promised to raise our standing in the world. Though many doubt his foreign policy credentials, Senator Obama clearly believes that he will be able to make the United States a "respected" nation again, including among Middle Eastern countries that hate our guts.

To do so, President-Elect Obama has promised non-conditional sit-downs with Iran, Syria, Venezuela, Cuba, and North Korea. As asked by many before me, how in the world would he get tyrannical dictators to come to our side on issues? Is he that good with words? More importantly, how can he sit with, let's say, Iran and not have the Iranian government turn it into a massive propoganda victory? Can President Obama really help our foreign policy by sitting down with murderous and/or crazy dictators without preconditions? I think the answer is clear.
