Gay Marriage Ban Ruled Unconstitutional

The Iowa Supreme Court has ruled that a law banning same-sex marriage is unconstitutional. This is a victory for those that stand for equal rights and for the rights of gay Americans. This ruling may make the state the third to make the practice legal, after Massachusetts and Connecticut.

The Supreme Court of the United States should step into the fray and create a nation-wide ruling, deeming attempts to outlaw gay marriage illegal. This is a national issue, not a states-rights one, and the federal government needs to step up for the rights of all Americans.

President Obama should also call for the nation-wide legalization of the practice. Unfortunately, either core religious beliefs or cowardly political considerations prevent him from doing so. We need a President that will stand up for rights and make sure that politics or antiquated religious beliefs do not overshadow basic logic and the right thing to do.
