America Must Say Thank You to Lincoln

With all of the talk about Obama being the next Abraham Lincoln, maybe we should take a moment and say thank you to the actual Lincoln.

Our 16th President preserved the Union, defeated the Confederacy, and freed the slaves. He did this while having problems at home, a child dying, and many incompetent generals. And he also only got 39% of the popular vote in 1860. And they call Bush an illegitimate President?

And truthfully, Bush has more in common with Lincoln than Obama might ever. Bush and Lincoln "started" a war that was "unnecessary" and "unwinnable." In both cases they "wasted money" for people considered less worthy than "real Americans." They both freed millions from oppression. Both were incredibly hated and misunderstood. Both were considered dumb country boys trying to tell us all what to do. Both put their principles before politics.

So thank you Mr. Lincoln.
And thank you Mr. Bush.

Obama's Starting to Sound Better

I don't know if anyone's been following the news lately, but Barack Obama has become a true politician. Many questioned his experience, but since he was elected, he has learned to disregard his promises and do what he-- or his advisors want to do.

Well, Obama got a lot of notice early in the primaries as an eloquent firebrand against the Iraq War. Now with the war being won and all, it sounds like he's changing his tune. That or he's confused. In any case, it's a real change from almost two years of campaigning. At this rate, he'll ask for American troops in Iraq for 101 years.

And I know that a lot of neo-cons also fantasized over Obama now appear to be believing in change even more. Heck, even Karl Rove is giving his praise to the President-Elect:

On the Wall Street Journal free market right they are seeing, in his economic team, the possibility that he is really as safe to capitalism as a banker. Karl Rove has concluded that "Mr. Obama's economic team was reassuring. He's generally surrounded himself with intelligent, mainstream advisers."

So-- it sounds like Obama's abandoning parts of his tax plan and appears to be bringing around a third term of George W. Bush!

Obama puts Hillary in State, keeps Gates on at the Pentagon. Gee, how long until Obama announces he's hired Bush as an "Assistant President."

Sheesh. I thought we were getting change. Those Obama voters might as well have written in Bush's name.

But a third term of George W. Bush isn't the worst thing in the world.

Continuity we can believe in!

Bush: Bipartisan to the End

George W. Bush has been called a lot of things. But one of the things that he hasn't been called often is bipartisan. Funny, you think? But if you look at his record, he actually has been very good on this point.

* Bush worked with Democrats to push through Texas education reform.
* Bush worked with Democrats on a Democratic plan to push through U.S. educational reform.
* Bush partnered with Democrats to fight the Taliban and al Qaeda.
* Bush partnered with Democrats to pass the Iraq War resolution. The Senate version of the bill was introduced by a Democrat and in both Chambers of Congress, Democrats flocked to the bill.
* The military under the Bush Administration exposed the abuses at Abu Gharaib.
* Bush has been one of the most pro-environmental Presidents in our history. He has set aside massive acreage for conservation, including the largest tract in American history. ANWR was not drilled in (unfortunately) and Bush was willing to work with Dems to help our environment.
* Bush attempted to work with Dems for Social Security reform.
* Bush helped in the process of the bipartisan 9/11 Commission.
* Bush established a bipartisan foreign policy regarding Iran and Syria.
* Bush has worked overtime to ensure a good transition to Obama's administration. This despite the talk of Bush remaining in power through an emergency declaration.

George W. Bush is treated like a clown and a charlatan today. When history looks back on what he's done and the things that he has had to put up with, he will be given a kinder review.

Can Someone Explain This to Me? Part 4

With this question, I will be straightforward and quick. Are we safer under an Obama Presidency?

Obama: We Don't Need Oil

President-Elect Obama has already announced a major step back in his emerging Presidency. Obama stated that he will reverse President Bush's order to allow oil drilling on public lands.

Unfortunately, with our dependency on foreign oil actually increasing, we cannot afford to stop drilling. Perhaps McCain was right about expanded drilling.... And oil prices are actually falling. This is our chance to drive in the knife to OPEC and drive oil under $50.

With Iran's nuclear program proceeding and their belligerency scathing, why are we not drilling?

Commemorative Everything

Has anyone noticed that since Obama was elected, every publication and program is falling over itself to produce commemorative posters, pullouts, and other general inanity.

I don't remember the same thing happening when Bush was elected in 2000 or reelected in 2004. I mean, in 2004, Bush even had accomplishments under his belt.

If this is the celebration Obama gets for not making a major policy accomplishment, what happens if he gets something done? There would be pandemonium!

Wait-- I Thought Elections Were Cancelled!

With all of the 9/11 Truth movement and the "Bush Lied" movement, I could have sworn that I heard that elections were supposed to be canceled today. I haven't voted yet, but it certainly appears that voting is occurring!

I don't know what the problem is! I swear, men in black were supposed to come from Karl Rove's dungeon and destroy voting places. Or... there's going to be massive voter fraud! Well, I guess we have that one covered.

Okay, okay... I'm beginning to hyperventilate. They told me that the 2004 and 2006 elections were supposed to be canceled too. What's happening? Wasn't Bush supposed to declare himself President for life? I'm still waiting for Condoleeza Rice to crown him with olive branches. What's going on? (Not to sound like Admiral Stockdale) I'm sure the army is preparing for the riots after the vote is rigged.

Okay... we just need to see. I might need to move to Iran or some other free nation. I just can't stand the stench of fascism!

Today's Winner-- President Bush

I saw an article from RCP today stating that President Bush will be the definite loser of the election today. However, it seems like Bush may actually be the big winner.

Here's why:
*Bush's Presidency coincided with economic growth between 2003-2007. If Obama raises energy prices and crashes the markets, President Bush's economy may seem just fine.
* President Bush has kept us safe from terrorist attack. Considering Joe Biden has already guaranteed a crisis, Bush's track record may still hold up.
*President Bush unfortunately has presided over one of the largest expansions of government. However, this may be small in comparison to the next four years with a Democratic executive and legislative branch.
* The military budget may be shrunk, making it more difficult to respond to terrorist and other foreign threats.

So make sure that we pick the right person for the job-- VOTE McCAIN!

President Bush's Accomplishments, Part 2

This is part two of our series. Part one was about the strengthening of alliances. This one is:

Avoiding a (Bigger) Financial Crisis

With the tremendous problems in the worldwide economy, this statement may seem almost humorous. However, in truth it could be said that the Bush Administration's policies have prevented an even bigger collapse.

1. Preventing a Depression After 9/11

While I do believe that Bush's tax cuts were too deep, they were a big help in preventing a global depression after September 11th, 2001. With the economy already in a recession and great uncertainty in the future, the tax cuts were able to keep money in the market and not in the government's coffers. While later these cuts and increased spending caused large deficits later, for the two years after the September 11th attacks, they helped keep the economy keep its head above water.

In addition, the bailout of the airline companies prevented that industry's collapse and kept money flowing. Keeping interest rates down and increasing the money supply helped lead to the financial mess, but they did also keep liquidity in a shaky market.

2. Keeping the Oil Flowing

With the Middle East about to explode before Bush even took office, he was able to keep the global economy from collapsing by keeping petroleum running. Even though oil prices have shot up tremendously, there wasn't a shortage, which considering the events of the last eight years, is almost extraordinary.

Bush has strengthened ties with some oil producing nations like Kazakhstan, Nigeria, and Colombia. In addition, he has recently signed an order to allow more domestic drilling. However, his biggest accomplishment is to blunt the power of dictatorships causing oil shortages.

When Bush took office, the governments of the Sudan, Libya, Iraq, Iran, Venezuela, and Russia were annoyed at American influence. These nations, if they acted together, could cut off oil for the West. In addition, a concerted military attack by Iran or Iraq (or both) on Kuwait and Saudi Arabia could have also caused a disruption.

Today, Libya has rejected terrorism and is looking for a closer relationship with the West while Iraq's dictatorship was destroyed. Two of the links of the Axis of Oil were removed. By preventing a sustained oil shortage, Bush may well have saved the economy.

The Forgotten Nations: Albania, Georgia, and Kosovo

Over the last several administrations, relations with small, often little-known countries have grown substantially. It makes me proud to see that smaller nations of the world look up to the United States. In Albania, we are seen as a great benevolent nation. In Georgia we are seen as a big brother and the epitome of Democracy. In Kosovo we are seen as a defender of innocent civilians and a saviour of the weak.

It makes me proud. President Clinton and President Bush greatly improved relations with Albania and, although it didn't declare independence until 2008, Kosovo. Last year, for the first time ever, the reigning American President visited Albania. Their streets flooded to meet President Bush, civilians wore giant Uncle Sam hats, and people openly wept for the President of the country they look up to. In Georgia, President Bush has fostered strong relations to a small, but great Democracy.

But what will happen under an Obama Presidency? He will forget. As is well known, Albania, Kosovo, and, until recently, Georgia are not often in the world's spotlight. Obama will forget them. He would focus, rather, on larger nations, ones he deems perhaps more important. But he will forget the small nations. To me, I would much rather have Albania, Kosovo, and Georgia like us than, let's say, France. But Obama does not know.

It is clear to see that Senator Obama does not fully understand foreign relations. One needs look no further than the outbreak of hostilities between Georgia and Russia. With the Russian invasion of Russian territory, Obama had these very vague words for the international community, "The United States, Europe, and all other concerned countries must stand united, stemming this aggression and staking a peaceful solution to the crisis...We should continue to push for a United Nations Security Council resolution calling for an immediate end to the violence." Aggression by who? At the time it seemed as though Obama didn't know. McCain called on Russia to pull back its troops and cited the historical significance of Georgia, Russia, and the former Soviet Union.

Obama eventually released a stronger statement, but it was clear to see his loose grip on smaller countries in places not known to the average American. He will not remember Georgia, he will not remember Albania, and he will not remember Kosovo if he becomes President (barring something that brings them to the world stage). The forgetting of these staunch U.S. supporters is a sad reality should Obama be elected, and McCain defeated.

Remember.
