Murkowski Weighing Write-In Bid?

Update (7:59 PM):

It should be noted that Senator Bennett would have had a decent chance of victory in Utah, due to the State's overwhelming Republican majority, but the same cannot be said of Alaska - its politics are unpredictable at best.

Original post:

Bad news out of Alaska this evening via Roll Call.

If Senator Murkowski does run as a write-in candidate for reelection, she's only hurting her own image, the Republican Party in the State of Alaska and future control of the United States Senate. As you (the reader) might remember, Senator Bennett was also considered a viable "write-in" threat after his Primary loss in Utah.

Any thoughts on Murkowski's possible write-in campaign?

Glenn Beck Going to Alaska on 9/11

I don't know exactly why and I'm not sure what this has to do with Sarah Palin's planned event there, but it appears that the pair will be in Anchorage for some event taking place in the main convention center there. Former Governor Palin has an event planned which is still unannounced.

I hate to do this, but I'm going to cite the Huff Po
as a source. They were actually one of the first ones with the story.

Glenn Beck addressed his trip to the Frontier State on his radio show this week, calling it a "vacation" but keeping the nature of the event vague.
"I'm gonna give a speech up there and Sarah's gonna give a speech, but that's it," Beck said.

Of course there's rampant speculation over a presidential bid, but this seems unlikely. Beck also just said that he will not run for the Presidency, at least in 2012, despite countervailing research.

So what do you think is going on? Commemorative event? Presidential bid? Just a political pep talk?

Joe Miller Wins in Alaska.

Joe Miller has officially won the Republican Senatorial Nomination:

Judge Joe Miller - 52,360 - 50.71%.
Sen. Murkowski - 50,891 - 49.29%.
Difference in tally - 1,469 - 01.42%.

This represents the end of Senator Lisa Murkowski's Senate career, which started in December of 2002. She was originally appointed by her father to the position, and was elected to her own full-term (6 years) in 2004 by 9,349 votes. President Bush won Alaska by 80,000 votes that same day.

State of Alaska is counting 15,000 ballots today.

Update (10:25) - Just two more items to note:

This is the second time that Sarah Palin has defeated a Murkowski.

This is the first time in three decades that no Murkowski will be in DC.

Update (9:34) - Miller will bring something unique to D.C. from Alaska:

100% Conservatism. No questions asked.

Update (9:31) - I think it's safe to say that Miller has won:

Judge Joe Miller - 52,360 - 50.71%.
Sen. Murkowski - 50,891 - 49.29%.
Difference in tally - 1,469 - 01.42%.

Murkowski needs a miracle to win. It's time to concede.

Congrats to Mr.Miller, lets win this election now!

Update (5:34) - Visit the Alaska Politics Blog for Updates.

Murkowski-Miller results are current as of 5:30 PM.

As of now the Alaska Division of Elections has counted 6,096 Republican votes out of 15,000 total votes this afternoon (most are Republican, and there are still about 9,000-10,000 votes overall that need to be counted within the next few weeks), and Senator Murkowski has closed the gap by another 200+ votes.

Senator Murkowski-Joe Miller election day results:

Judge Joe Miller - 47,027 - 50.90%.
Sen. Murkowski - 45,359 - 49.10%.
Difference in tally - 1,668 - 01.80%.

Current Sen. Murkowski-Joe Miller election results:

Judge Joe Miller - 49,888 - 50.66%.
Sen. Murkowski - 48,594 - 49.34%.
Difference in tally - 1,294 - 01.30%.

Sen. Murkowski-Joe Miller absentee ballot vote split:

Sen. Murkowski - 3,235 - 53.00%.
Judge Joe Miller - 2,861 - 47.00%.
Difference in tally - 374 - 06.00%.

With 10,000 Republican absentee ballots uncounted, Senator Murkowski would only need to win 59% those of votes. However, with close to 25,000 outstanding ballots overall (including those already counted today), we can expect upwards to 15,000 Republican ballots in addition to the initial 92,000 votes that were cast last week, which means Senator Murkowski only needs to win 56% of all votes counted.

With 6,096 ballots counted - Murkowski has captured only 53% of votes counted. She might win a majority of absentee and uncounted votes over the next few weeks, but she must capture 56% of votes overall to win the nomination: something that seems increasingly unlikely, but not entirely impossible.

I'll be updating this article through out the day.

We Need to Take Two Steps Back.

This whole Senator Murkowski/Joe Miller situation has got out of control. The lines have been drawn between pro-grassroots Conservatives and the NRSC. Alaska's old GOP guard, and ideological Conservatives. Senator Lisa Murkowski and Joe Miller.

And it must stop. Everyone needs to take two steps back, and examine the entire situation with fresh eyes.

First, the race in Alaska is too close to call. Lisa Murkowski hasn't won the Nomination, and Joe Miller hasn't won the Nomination. So neither can have their victory stolen from them if 7,600 to 16,000 (5,000 to possibly 10,000 are GOP votes) absentee ballots are still floating around out there, uncounted.

Second, this race is too personal for all parties involved. The old GOP guard and the grassroots activists have been fighting a proxy war for months - in Utah, in Nevada, and in Colorado. And this GOP Nomination battle was/is the straw that broke the camel's back, leading both sides to open a volley of fire against one-another.

Finally, both sides need to realize that both candidates are very acceptable. Ms.Murkowski, is for the most part, a straight shooting Conservative who can please all Republicans, while Joe Miller is a dedicated Conservative who doesn't pussyfoot around with anyone.

Before either Party does something really stupid, both sides should sit down and reconcile with the facts of the matter. We're not on opposing sides, we're not enemies. We are in fact: friends, allies and ideological counterparts. And most importantly - we're all Republicans.

Joe Miller - 47,027 - 50.90%.
Murkowski - 45,359 - 49.10%.
Difference - 1,668 votes - 1.80%.

Miller's Lead Shrinks in AK Race

It appears that Joe Miller's victory may not be as secure as previously believed, as our own Mr. K pointed out. With more votes being counted his thin margin of victory appears to be shrinking-- and that's before 16,000 military and absentee ballots are counted. Still, it looks a little bit better for the Murkowski folks. The vote count has shifted by over 500 so far:

Miller was leading with 47,027 votes to 45,359 for Murkowski after the final precinct results came in late Wednesday afternoon. More than 16,000 absentees were requested from the Division of Elections and about 7,600 of them have come back so far.

So it looks like this could get more interesting-- keep your eyes peeled on this race. It looks like those 7,600 votes may create a Coleman-Franken style recount for us.

Senator Murkowski Can Still Win in Alaska.

NEWSFLASH: Joe Miller is not the victor in Alaska.

For some unknown reason, everyone wants to declare Joe Miller the victor in Alaska, despite the fact that thousands of absentee ballots have yet to be counted, and thousands of absentee ballots have yet to arrive. Why is about everyone so eager to declare Miller the winner? It is not like we are in real danger of losing Alaska this November....to a Democrat.

According to Alaska's Board of Election's website, 100% of Precincts have reported their tallies to the secretary of state, and the election results are even tighter than it was yesterday morning:

Joe Miller - 47,027 - 50.90%.
Murkowski - 45,359 - 49.10%.
Difference - 1,668 votes - 1.80%.

At last count - 7,600 absentee ballots out of 16,000 requested have been returned, and Dave Dittman, a pollster out of Anchorage, put the number of GOP ballots at about 5,000. Meaning about 65% of all absentee ballots are Republican ballots, and that we can expect close to 10,000 GOP votes if 15,400 absentee's are returned. And so on and so forth.

As of now Ms.Murkowski needs 67% of all absentee's (out of 5,000), but when votes from really rural areas of the state, and Military votes from overseas trickle in, the necessary percentage of votes needed for victory in the Murkowski camp will slowly decline (say 10,000 GOP absentee's come in, Murkowski would only need to capture 59% of the uncounted vote).

This race is not over.

When the initial absentee's are counted on Tuesday, we will know more in regard's to who will win.

Murkowski May Run Third Party

Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski likely lost yesterday's primary battle with a Sarah Palin-backed insurgent. There's now rumors that she will toss in her hat into the ring as a third party candidate:

"We are going to take a look at them and see whether the option is there or not, but it's a decision she (Murkowski) has to make," the Murkowski camp source said. "There is an option I know of."
This race might get even more interesting...

Alaska does it again!

Never trust polling data in Alaska.

According to the latest count, as published on Alaska's Board of Election website, Senator Lisa Murkowski is trailing her GOP/Tea Party Primary opponent by 1,960 votes, with about 98% of Alaskan precincts reporting. Leaving this closer than expected Republican Primary to absentee voters:

Joe Miller - 45,909 - 51.09%.
Murkowski - 43,949 - 48.91%.

The Anchorage Daily News is reporting that 16,000 absentee ballots were requested before yesterday's historic vote, and that 7,600 have already been returned. Absentee votes will be counted three times over the next two weeks, and Murkowski needs to win about 64% of those votes in order to have any shot at victory.

Can anyone else believe how close it is in Alaska? Obviously Palin power is alive and well within Conservative Republican ranks in her own state, but I really do wonder if this flip flop will come back to maul her in the future.

Don't trust the polls in Alaska:

The polls predicted a Don Young loss in 2008, but he won by 5.2%.
The polls predicted a 18 point Stevens' loss, but he lost by just 1.2%.
The polls predicted a 30 point Murkowski win, but she trails by 1.1%.

Primary Mania Predictions - August 24, 2010.

For the latest results, please visit our other Primary Mania article.

Today is Primary Mania in the United States of America, especially in Republican precincts, and as such, I decided to compile a list of the more interesting battles that are unfolding across the United States today, and offer my personal predictions. Please feel free to comment, and if you reside in any of the Primary states - Alaska, Arizona, and Florida - please get out there and vote.

Alaska's Senatorial Republican Primary

Senator Lisa Murkowski will defeat Joe Miller, who is backed by Sarah Palin and Tea Party groups by a 60-40% margin. Closer than expected, but a Murkowski win nonetheless, and a clear case of Palin backstabbing (she originally supported Murkowski last year).

Arizona's Senatorial Republican Primary

Senator John McCain will defeat Congressman JD Hayworth by a 70-25% margin, with a third lesser known candidate receiving the rest. Both have received the endorsement of Conservative individuals and organizations in Arizona, but Tea Partiers have mostly stayed out of the Primary.

Arizona's 3rd Congressional Repblican Primary

Will the Republican voters of Arizona's 3rd congressional district support attorney Ben Quayle, State Senator Pamela Gorman, or Paradise Valley Mayor, Vernon Parker? I personally have no idea who will win today, but I'm doubtful it will be the son of Vice-President Quayle, as a sex scandal has embroiled his campaign.

Florida's Gubernatorial Republican Primary

This Primary battle is nasty. Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum and Businessman Rick Scott have been tearing at one-another for the past few weeks via television advertisements. I support the Attorney General due to his very conservative record, and according to a recent poll of close to 800 Republicans: 39% (a plurality) of GOP voters do as well. But this race is up in the air.

Memo to Sarah Palin: Keep Todd at Distance.

Sarah Palin is a Conservative Republican. No questions asked.

Her husband, Todd Palin? That's another story altogether.

Mr.Palin was registered as a member of the Alaskan Independence Party for seven years (1995 through 2002), and though this wasn't a huge issue during the 2008 election, it does speak some volumes as to what Mr.Palin politically believes. You see, the AIP was founded as an very extreme pro-secessionist organization by Joe Vogler, and though their membership has moderated from that original stance over the decades, many within have not, which lead to Governor Hickel leaving the party back in 1994.

Did you get that? A year after Governor Hickel left the Party (he was and is the only Governor to ever be elected in Alaska on a third party ticket), due to lingering secessionists attempting to have another vote on Alaskan statehood, Todd Palin became a voting member of the Party, and only left in July of 2002, when his wife was running for the GOP Nomination in the Lt. Governor race.

Keep in mind that this post has nothing to do with Sarah Palin. I love the woman, I believe she is a damn fine American, and would definitely vote for her to become our 45th President of the United States, but she should keep her husband at arm's length when endorsing/supporting candidates. As a lot of potential Democratic and Republican opponents could use Todd Palin's questionable background to destroy a whole bastion of Republican candidates who Sarah Palin endorsed.

So I have this memo for Governor Palin: Keep Todd at a Distance when supporting Republicans for public office, and please do not let him publicly endorse/support the candidates that you do, as I can guarantee that smart opponents, whether they be Democrat or Republican, will only go after the endorsed candidate, and your husband as anti-american loons.

Senator Ted Stevens Dead in Alaska Plane Crash?

UPDATE - It has been confirmed: Senator Stevens has died. RIP.

According to a local television station in Alaska, Senator Ted Stevens was among the five people who perished as a result of a tragic plane crash in Dillingham, Alaska. However, the Anchorage Daily News is reporting that the claim is unconfirmed as of now.

Our thoughts at Jumping in Pools are with the families of the dead, and we sincerely hope that Senator Ted Stevens has survived the unfortunate plane crash. Senator Stevens was not only the longest serving Republican in US Senate history, but he was also a airman during the second World War, and received the Distinquished Flying Cross for his service.

The Medal that Senator Stevens was awarded:

This Medal is Awarded for:

Interesting Alaska Statehood Act Facts.

Here's a question - What do You really know about the State of Alaska, and their long effort to become a first rate citizenry? Probably not much, even though the Senate approved the Alaska Statehood Act just 52 years ago yesterday. I consider that to be a travesty, because until I decided to research the history of Alaska yesterday afternoon, I too was as ignorant and as dumbfounded as most Americans are about our 49th state.

So here are some Interesting Alaska Statehood Act Facts:

Fact One - Alaska was American Property for over nine decades before becoming a State.

Fact Two - Republicans initially favored Hawaii Statehood over Alaska Statehood, due to the fact Hawaii was a Republican stronghold, while Alaska was a Democrat stronghold. How things have changed.

Fact Three - Southern Democrats opposed Alaskan Statehood out of a well placed fear that 2 more pro-civil rights Senators would be seated.

Fact Four - Alaskan Delegates convened for the Winter of 1955-1956 to draft Alaska's State Constitution, which some still consider to be one of the greatest Constitution'a ever to have been written.

Fact Five - On April 24th, 1956: Out of 25,000+ voters, 68% of Alaskans voted to ratify their State Constitution, along with the infamous Tennessee Plan.

Fact Six - The Tennessee Plan was simply a tactic Territories used to force Congress to accept their push for Statehood status. It involved electing two Senators, and the appropriate amount of Representatives, and than sending them to Washington to demand to be seated. This method failed for Alaska.

Fact Seven - President Dwight Eisenhower finally called for Alaskan Statehood during his 1958 State-Of-The-Union speech before Congress.

Fact Eight - On May 28th, 1958: The House of Representatives passed the Alaska Statehood Act (differing versions were passed in previous years) by a margin of 210-166.

Fact Nine - On June 30th, 1958: The United States Senate passed the Alaska Statehood Act by a margin of 64-20. It should be noted that all previous Alaska Statehood Legislative movements failed in the Senate.

Fact Ten - On July 7th, 1958: President Dwight Eisenhower signs the Alaska Statehood Act into effect, all that is needed for Statehood is a confirmation from Alaska voters, and for their official government to be elected.

Fact Eleven - On August 26, 1958: Alaska Voters officially approve joining the Union.

Fact Twelve - On January 3rd, 1959: President Dwight Eisenhower signed the official declaration which made Alaska the 49th state.

There's your history lesson for the day.

Palin Endorses Murkowski Opponent

Former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin has endorsed the Republican opponent of incumbent Senator Lisa Murkowski, daughter of a corrupt former Senator:

The "bad blood" refers perhaps to the fact that Palin in 2006 challenged Murkowski's father, then-Gov. Frank Murkowski (R), in the GOP primary for governor. She won that race and ultimately the seat, while Murkowski finished third. Murkowski had appointed his daughter to the Senate seat he vacated to become governor; Palin was believed to have been under consideration for that appointment as well.

The difference between Gov. Parnell and Gov. Palin.

Governor Sean Parnell is soaring above the clouds in Alaska: 70% of Alaskans approve of his job performance, he's leading all three of his potential Democratic opponents in Alaska's upcoming Gubernatorial election by 28% or more, and his popularity can only further his political career; Congressman Don Young must retire, eventually.

What about Governor Sarah Palin? Her agenda and Sean Parnell's agenda is one of the same and how are the voters of Alaska reacting to Sarah Palin's role as a national political commentator. It pains me to write this, but the voters of Alaska, who once elected Sarah Palin as their Governor, no longer approve or support her.

Only 41% of Alaska voters would support her for President, if she ran, and even worse; 50% of Alaska voters share an unfavorable viewpoint of the former Governor, who resigned from office last July.

This doesn't represent a dramatic political shift in Alaska, considering another Republican; Sean Parnell, is soaring high with the birds, and that President Obama's approval rating in Alaska is hovering around 40% ( 61% of Alaskans atleast somewhat disapprove of President Obama's job performance).

What's the difference between the two Governor's?

One is in the National spotlight and the other is in Juneau. Could it be that simple, are Alaskans annoyed at Governor Palin for leaving them last Summer, are Alaskans aggravated that she has become a negative symbol of their great state? I really don't know, but I do know this: Alaskan Republicans, Independents and even some Democrats support a Conservative agenda in their state, just not Sarah Palin.

What say you; is the Sarah Palin brand suffering from being such a polarizing brand, or is the Sarah Palin brand downfall the result of quitting as Governor last Summer, which angered and confused Americans statewide and nationwide?

All polling numbers are from Rasmussen Reports; a Conservative polling organization.

Why Do They Hate Sarah?

When Senator John McCain chose Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his Vice-Presidential nominee, the political world was taken by surprise. Since that day last year, Palin has been creating a lot of attention for herself.

Accomplishments in Alaska, such as pioneering a new natural gas pipeline that could reduce costs is ignored. Taking on oil companies who were squeezing Alaska, ignored. Taking on corruption within her own party, ignored.

So why would they hate her?

1. McCain's announcement took the political world by surprise. Democratic activists expected Romney and had all of their attack points set. When Palin was picked instead, a bizarre barrage of attacks came in many directions. Instead of a smooth, coherent message, much of them were personal attacks and attacks on her family.

2. Alaska is a rural state. With no cities over 100,000, Alaska is one of the smallest-populated states. Many elites in the democratic establishment criticized her from their urban centers-- New York, Chicago, and San Francisco. The life of people in the countryside is almost unknown and looked down upon. Palin was painted as a hick because her town was smaller than a city council district in New York.

3. Palin's inexperience. Palin was serving her first term as Alaska governor, and even with her accomplishments, her resume seemed a little thin. Sound familiar? Almost the same as Barack Obama, except Plain had a few accomplishments. Perhaps this was guilt for supporting a first-term Senator who began running for President while in the Illinois State Senate.

4. Palin's spunk. Palin likes to hit back when attacked. She doesn't shy away from a fight and it can get her negative exposure. Take the David Letterman spat-- in many media quarters she was blamed for the flak over Letterman's joke. In seamless misogynist fashion, Keith Olberman basically said she 'led Letterman on.' When you get up after being knocked down, people like to knock you back down.

Palin to Join Obama Cabinet

Palin's New Job in the Obama White House
Roger Herrera
Washington Times

WASHINGTON -- Governor Sarah Palin (R) stunned much of the American political establishment with a revelation that she was planning to resign as the Governor of Alaska. Palin, best known for her Vice-Presidential run in 2008, was elected in 2006.

The Alaska Governor is expected to resign her position by the end of this July and place the state in the hands of current Lt. Governor Sean Parnell. The Governor expressed sadness and excitement over her decision, saying "Many just accept that lame duck status, and they hit that road. They draw a paycheck. They kind of milk it. And I'm not going to put Alaskans through that."

The reason for the resignation was not immediately clear. Some speculated that it was due to a potential 2012 run for the White House. Others believed that stepping down was due to ethical questions regarding her term in office. Other has stated that her action could be a permanent withdrawal from politics.

Late Friday evening, however, the answer became more apparent. Current Secretary of Energy Steven Chu has been asked to leave the Obama Administration due to his own ethical scandal. Chu was involved in a $500 million dollar project named the Energy Biosciences Institute, funded by British Petroleum. Additional information emerged about Chu's relationships with other energy giants causing President Obama to ask Chu to step down by August 1.

The Washington Times has received word from a Palin spokesperson that her abrupt resignation is directly related to the soon-to-be-open Cabinet position. In addition, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs is set to release a statement welcoming Palin into the Obama Administration.

Analysts believe that Obama is attempting to reconcile political foes in order to build a more stable presidency, as seen with former rival Hillary Clinton. By placing Palin in the Cabinet, both Palin and Obama could claim bipartisan credentials.

Palin reached acclaim in Alaska politics for proposing new pipelines for natural gas and crude oil, as well as her adversarial relationship with large oil producers. In the 2008 McCain/Palin campaign, Palin famously called for more energy independence and stated that the United States should, "Drill, baby, drill."

Palin's acceptance of Obama's offer was reached in a June 28th phone call. During this call, the President reportedly said that he was willing to "bury the hatchet" and "usher in a new era of bipartisanship."

Reports are also circulating stating that the Alaska Governor plans to switch party affiliations. According to the same Palin spokesperson, those reports are false.

Obama Shocked to Learn Real Military not Run Like Game of Risk

WASHINGTON- In a surprising turn of events, months of US military planning have proved useless when it was revealed to President Obama that real armies are not used similarly to Risk, a popular board game.

The revelation comes at a time when the President has planned an invasion of North Korea because of their recent aggressive actions.

"This is terrible," said Secretary of Defense Robert Gates. "The President had planned to turn in cards and bolster the United States army. Not only would we have strengthened our forces of men, but also we'd have added a couple cannons and three horses... He even had two free men in the Eastern United States."

President Obama had planned to conquer Kamchatka from Alaska with his new army. "From there, I would be able to strike Mongolia, which is where the Korean peninsula is located," the President stated. "The only problem is that the gray army is strong there, and their roller always wants a redo when the dice go off the table."

According to sources, the Commander in Chief had even prepared for the invasion by opening older versions of Risk and placing blocks and Roman Numerals on the board.

Unfortunately, President Obama was informed late last night that the military attack would not be feasible. "They told me that my men on the board didn't really count," said Obama, referring to the Joint Chiefs of Staff. "I said that they were just jealous that I had been rolling sixes all game. But, no, they said that North Korea does not recognize the supremacy of a board game.

"On the bright side," said the President, "this won't affect my plans to invade Indonesia via Siam. If I can get Australia, I'll get two extra men a turn."

The President is also reportedly planning on playing Monopoly with CEOs from major US car companies.

Alaska Taking the Lead on Alternative Energy

Alaska, run by Governor Sarah Palin, has announced an ambitious new goal: 50% of Alaska's energy being renewable by 2025. Now there are not many people up in the Arctic Circle, but it's twice as ambitious as President Obama's:

That's from the governor who can't wait to drill for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and who sunk $500 million into a yet-to-be built gas pipeline. But now, she said, she would move to wean the state's far-flung villages from diesel oil to wind and geothermal and make the state's six utilities cease their in-fighting to more efficiently serve populated areas.

Palin's 50% goal one-ups California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who touts himself as the nation's green governor: Two months ago, he signed an executive order requiring 33% of Golden State electricity to be generated from renewable sources by 2020. President-elect Barack Obama, whose home state of Illinois is a major coal producer, has called for 25% renewable energy use nationwide by 2025.

Good for Sarah Palin and good for Alaska.
