Obama Plans "Peace in Our Time" With Genocidal Sudan

There appears to be another severe problem emanating from the White House. Not only has the President failed to stand up for democracy in Iran and Honduras, he is now placating a regime which is currently engaged in a horrific genocide.

The Sudan is a dictatorship ruled by General Omar Bashir. If you'll remember correctly, Bashir allowed Osama bin Laden into his country in the 1990s and is assisting Hamas. Also, the Sudan has developed close ties with Iran. The Sudan has been accused of stockpiling chemical weapons components and committing war crimes.

But no war crime compares to the genocide in Darfur. Since 2003, over 100,000 people in the southwestern province of Darfur have been killed due to race, culture, or religion. Bashir has attempted to either wipe out, disperse, or enslave the people of the region.

The Sudan has attacked its neighbor Chad-- including Darfuri refugees in the past. The Sudan is an enemy of Israel and has been struck in 1998 by the US for supporting al Qaeda. The Sudan is the worst regime in North Africa. (Keep in mind that this includes Libya headed by Qaddafi and Egypt with Mubarak.)

The UN has been critical of the genocide, but apart from a small peacekeeping force enacted due to pressure from the Bush Administration, not much else has happened. Then-Senator Obama spoke out against the genocide last year during campaign season, but appears to be singing another tune.

President Obama can't be serious. The plan includes initiatives to get the Sudan to cooperate with the ICC over the genocide in Darfur. However, by giving Bashir recognition, you cancel out the impact of asking for cooperation. In addition, the White House is thinking of removing the country from the terrorist sponsorship list-- apparently while Sudan is still funding Hamas and other groups.

This is a terrible precedent. Our allies in Georgia have been left out to dry, Israel and Britain have been insulted, and democratic movements have been snubbed. But, frankly, I'm offended that my President will bend over backwards to placate one of the worst regimes on the planet.
