Congressman convicted, another is planning his retirement.

Louisiana's second congressional district has thrown two very different men into the National spotlight, one a convicted felon, one a man of principle, one a Democrat, and one a Republican.

Convicted Democrat:

William "Cold cash" Jefferson has been convicted of accepting bribes, as we all remember that $90,000 dollars the FBI found in his freezer. Why he was not kicked out of the House of Representatives the day we learned all of this information, I have no idea, then again.....Pelosi did promise the most "ethical" Congress ever. Right.

Jefferson could spend as many as 150 years in the slammer, he should get every single one of them.

2008 election :

Jefferson for some unknown reason was still running as the Democrat for the congressional seat, against Joseph Cao, a lawyer & a South Vietnam first generation American, decided to challenge the criminal Congressman, he pulled off the largest upset in the entire 2008 elections by just 2,000 votes (largest upset, because this district as a +28 Democrat advantage). He became the first Republican Congressman from this district in over 100 years, and the first representative to vote for atleast one Conservative issue.....probably in decades.

Congressman Cao :

Congressman Cao is as expected, a moderate Republican, the brand of Republicans I want to see less of in elected office, however in a +28 Democrat district, I will cheer any Republican that comes along. He has supported the Conservative Republican position on the stimulus, cap & tax, and has voted with the Republicans 76% of the time.

Enter in the health care debate, Congressman Cao knows this vote will define his re-election campaign in 2010, and has he said "

“Being a Jesuit, I very much adhere to the notion of social justice,” Cao said. “I do fully understand the need of providing everyone with access to health care, but to me personally, I cannot be privy to a law that will allow the potential of destroying thousands of innocent lives,” he explained to the Louisiana newspaper.

“I know that voting against the health care bill will probably be the death of my political career,” Cao said, “but I have to live with myself, and I always reflect on the phrase of the New Testament, ‘How does it profit a man’s life to gain the world but to lose his soul.’”

He would rather vote against this horrific health care legislation, and lose his congressional seat. Instead of going against what he believes, his principles.

While I do not agree with Cao on a lot of things, it takes real courage to stand on principles when faced with a doomed political career, he is not your typical politican, and I will gladly accept his opposition against this health care debacle with open arms.
