One of our features is a hero who we think exemplifies the positive traits of a human being. And one of our heroes is more than just a hero, he is a truly great person. I am honored to nominate Elie Wiesel.
Born in Romania, Wiesel's entire family was murdered by the Nazis. He wrote the famous book Night about this. While the book is incredibly heart-wrenching, it should be required reading for every school child:
Never shall I forget those moments which murdered my God and my soul and turned my dreams to dust. Never shall I forget these things, even if I am condemned to live as long as God Himself. Never.
And Wiesel made sure that the world did not forget the horrors of the Holocaust. He tried to make it so it did not happen again. He has written many books, with the intent of making sure that humanity does not repeat the same mistakes and that we think about what we are doing. He won the Nobel Peace Prize and met with President Bush to ask that Saddam Hussein be removed from power for his crimes.
He truly is a hero:
Let us remember, let us remember the heroes of Warsaw, the martyrs of Treblinka, the children of Auschwitz. They fought alone, they suffered alone, they lived alone, but they did not die alone, for something in all of us died with them.

Wiesel is one of those who has used the fact of the holocaust to defend cultural genocide and ethnic cleansing when practiced by Jews against the Arab people of Palestine. When he and his crones vow
"Never again!", they mean "Never again shall this happen TO JEWS." Go back to Deir Yassein, the King David Hotel, the murder of Folke Bernadotte, and the lying pretence that the supposed Israeli "land-for-peace" offers. Look at those "offers" closely, and you will see they are offering Palestinians nothing but a row of Bantustans. Their aim is to expunge all the indigenous population from that country, which they disingenuously call "transfer"--anywhere else it would be called ethnic cleansing. Wiesel has actually vowed, "I will never criticize Israel", which is the most shameful promise ever taken by man, angel or fiend---no matter how much evil he sees, he swears to us he won't criticize it if it's done by Israelis. That is not very good Judaism, to say the least---What if the prophet Nathan had taken such a stand.
Is there any more pompous, self-serving, anti-Palestinian bigot in the world than Elie Wiesel? Not since he praised then-General Ariel Sharon for his massacre of innocent women and children at Shatila and Sabra refugee camps.
If there is anything that's almost as obscene as the holocaust itself, it's men like Wiesel who us it as an excuse to mete out similar treatment to other nations. Don't forget the Norman Finkelstein's parents were also death camp survivors, and he at least has the decency to call for a bi-national state in which Arabs and Jews would have equal rights, and he also has exposed the self-serving efforts by Wiesel and others to use the holocaust as an occasion for personal enrichment. So, by the way, did Martin Buber. And it's men like Buber and Finkelstein who are the heroes of post-holocaust judaism.
I hope Wiesel is the last Jew to vow support for a particular state irrespecitve of how that state behaves.
