We Must Support the Kurds

News out of Iraq appears to show that the Iraqi Army is attempting to curb Kurdish influence in the northern portion of the country. The operation has not caused violence, and it appears that things are going smoothly. However, if the federal government decides to push back the Kurds from lands that are rightfully theirs, then the United States should use its influence to help the Kurds.

The Kurdish people in Northern Iraq are the most pro-American on the planet. They have also been our strongest allies in the Iraq War, supplying us with troops that speak their native Kurdish, along with Arabic and English. English is being taught as a second language in Kurdistan, where 75% of the people in Iraq speak Arabic. Kurdistan has shown that they will stand with the U.S. and we need to stand with them, especially after we almost abandoned them in 1991.

The Kurds deserve better. They are a stable democracy which loves America. This is the result of the Bush Doctrine, and we should all be proud of its results.
