Judd Gregg, a Republican Senator from New Hampshire was the lynchpin. With him leaving the Senate, the Democrats could take a filibuster 60-seat majority. Instead, the Senator and former Governor has decided to withdraw himself from becoming the next Secretary of Commerce.
Now why would this man do this? Obviously being in the Cabinet would only add to his already impressive resume. However, it seems like Gregg was trying to stall the Democratic supermajority.
Chances are he saw that a sixty-seat Senate would create a situation where any bill that the President wanted passed could be passed with little fuss. He saw how the President has already attempted to run roughshod over the small opposition. He saw himself as being one of the last people who could do anything.
And it appears that Gregg's own statement is trying to tiptoe around this, showing that the President chose him to get him out of the Senate more than have a good pick for his Cabinet:
It has become apparent during this process that this will not work for me, as I have found that on issues such as the stimulus package and the Census there are irresolvable conflicts for me. Prior to accepting this post, we had discussed these and other potential differences, but unfortunately we did not adequately focus on these concerns.
It must be considered that the "new" politics of 2009 are just the old politics, except more sharp, politically lethal, and likely to spend your money.
