The tragedies of September 11 happened eight years ago today. But what I was to ask you all is:
Do you remember?
Do you remember where you were when you heard the news?
Do you remember when you saw the horrible images that day?
Do you remember the fear that gripped you, the shock that ran up your spine?
Do you remember your tears for the fallen and the innocent?
Do you remember?
Do you remember watching the news with your family, knowing that those that died could never see theirs again?
Do you remember the love you felt for every single American?
Do you remember the fire fighters and police officers who ran into the burning towers?
Do you remember when the towers fell?
Do you remember?
Do you remember that very first night, kneeling down to pray?
Do you remember sending in a care package, or money, or love to the people working at Ground Zero?
Do you remember watching President Bush tell us that American resolve cannot be dented, and the pride you felt after hearing it?
Do you remember how you kissed your wife and children, mother and father, sister and brother every day?
Do you remember?
Do you remember President Bush standing on the rubble of the Twin Towers, declaring that "the people who knocked these buildings down will hear all of us soon."
Do you remember the NYPD and NYFD hats that baseball players wore in the days afters?
Do you remember when you thanked your local firefighters and police officers?
Do you remember hearing God Bless America, and the chants of USA, USA, USA?
Do you remember?
Do you remember when Mike Piazza hit a game winning home run at Shea Stadium in the first Mets game after the attack?
Do you remember Rudy Giuliani leading New York?
Do you remember that we were all New Yorkers after the attack?
Do you remember, my friend? Do you remember?
Eight years later, I sometimes forget much of this; some of my memories are less crisp. But, even though it is said that time heals all wounds, mine are still fresh, and I have not gone a September 11 since the tragedy without crying.
