Now, as much as I want this to be a major story, it's important not to jump the gun. After all, Clinton showed far worse numbers in this department in late 1994 and he cruised to reelection two years later. Furthermore, even President Bush fell behind a generic Democrat in 2004-- the incompetence of John Kerry helped stem this tide.
So the newest poll from CNN does paint a fairly dark picture for the President among registered voters:
Generic GOP: 50%
Obama: 45%
Other/und: 5%
This is a difference from the 2008 results:
Obama: 53%
McCain: 46%
Other: 1%
So with all of this being said, I'd like to see more of a trendline before we start writing the history books-- we need to nominate a competent, exciting candidate to win in 2012-- not just someone who looks good only to us.
